The Green Books gives essential guidance for structural steelwork connections for use in buildings. They have been produced by the SCI/BCSA Connections Group, which was established in 1987 to bring together academics, consultants and steelwork contractors to work on the development of authoritative design guides for structural steelwork connections. SCI P358 (2014 reprint) provides procedures for designing joints in steel-framed structures in accordance with BS EN 1993-1-8[1] and its accompanying National Annex[2], and with BS EN 1993-1-1[3] and its National Annex[4]. Connections between beams and columns using non-preloaded and preloaded bolts are included. The Structural Steel Connections Limit State Design describes the behavior and operation of connections for steel buildings as well as the ideal design. It is based on SABS 0162-1, 1991 edition (SANS 10162-2).
To promote standardisation and reduce project costs and design time among steel fabricators, engineers and drafts- people, the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (Saisc) has launched a new book called Structural Steel Connections or more commonly known as The Green Book.
Structural Steel Connections deals with the elements connecting parts, such as beams and columns, together in steel structures, including the design of the connections, their fabrication in the workshop and their assembly on the construction site.
De Clercq says although international research was used in the compilation of Struc- tural Steel Connections, the book is written for South Africans and it is based on the local standards in the steel industry.
He hopes that the book will generally be adopted by industry professionals and by companies to compile their own practical guidelines and company standards and that it will become the ultimate reference for structural steel connections.
PAOLO RUGARLI is a structural engineer and the principal of Castalia S.r.l., a software developer and structural engineering consultancy founded in 1991. SCI has been a leading advocate of structural steel reuse and has recently completed its latest collaborative EU project on reuse called PROGRESS which focussed on single-storey, steel framed buildings which currently present the highest potential for reuse.
A protocol recommending data collection, inspection and testing to ensure that reclaimed structural steelwork can be reused with confidence, has been developed by SCI (with financial support from Cleveland Steel & Tubes) and is freely available here.
As part of the project SCI has developed a prototype on-line portal for trading reclaimed structural steelwork and for storing the relevant structural steel information (BIM datasets) from new buildings to facilitate their future reuse. SCI is keen to hear from any organisations who can help us commercialise this service.

This blog entry addresses engineering, detailing, and erection of shear connections which represent 95% of the connections on every steel project. While they are often unfairly regarded as simple, they are rarely simple. Shear connections are complex due to the many different types of connections, number of limit states to check, as well as geometry and erection complexity. I will compare and rate the various methods the Engineer of Record (EOR) uses to provide shear demands. In addition, common types of shear connections will be presented and discussed. Shear connections are rarely controlled simply by the number and capacity of the bolts, and this paper will examine all limit states and discuss what to look out for during shop drawing review.There has been an ongoing debate as to the responsibility for the design of steel connections for building projects. As a result, different practices are used in design office varying across the country. For instance, on the west coast, the connections are often fully designed by be EOR as part of the construction documentations. Whereas, on the East coast, the connection design criteria and requirements are specified on the construction documents, but the final design is delegated to a licensed professional engineer (often hired by the fabricator) in the state of jurisdiction. I have the rather unique experience of seeing both sides of the issue of connections design, first as an EOR designing buildings, specifying connection criteria and checking the shop drawings for conformance. And now for the past four years, I have worked for fabricators to design connections based on the requirements specified by the EOR.
